Which ECU is Right For You? - REFLASHED OEM vs STANDALONE ECU

d4a live: 🤍 Infinity 506: 🤍 In today's video we're talking about ECUs and comparing stock OEM ECUs vs aftermarket. We will see the pros and cons of both and we will see what can be achieved with reflashed oem ecus vs standalone ecus and which approach best suits which type of end-user. What is an ECU? Well ECU stands for ENGINE CONTROL UNIT and it's the key component of every electronically fuel injected vehicle. Sometimes you will also hear the terms ECM or PCM which stand for engine control module or power control module all of these mean the same thing. An ECU is basically a computer that receives inputs from various sensors on the engine which basically tell it how much air is coming into the engine and then based on these inputs the ECU will control the injectors to inject the correct amount of fuel and instruct the ignition coils to fire the spark plug at the correct time with the goal of extracting the maximum efficiency and/or power from the engine. This controlling of injection and ignition is done using what is known as maps. The most important of these are fuel maps and ignition maps. An OEM ECU is technically not designed to be tampered with. If evidence of tampering with it is found this will obviously void your warranty if you have one and tampering with the OEM ECU obviously risks engine damage. But tampering with anything engine related obviously carries a certain level of engine damage risk, however these risks of tampering with things have never successfully deterred humans from tampering with them...so we tamper. So how do we even tamper with an OEM ECU? Well, the first step towards this is actually reading what's inside the ECU. Manufacturers are not keen on giving anyone with a laptop easy access to what's inside the ECU, which is why the data in the maps and other features of an OEM ECUs isn't really straightforward to read. But people have encrypted anything and everything and OEM ECUs are no exception. Once the contents of the ECU are encrypted an interface that reads and displays them in a meaningful manner on a pc is created. There are countless different interfaces out there. A few examples are: HP tuners, hondata, ecutek, k-tag, versatuner, etc. Some are open source and free, others must be purchased. All of these interfaces or software packages cover different makes and models and many overlap with each other. Obviously popular vehicle platforms will be better off here and will always have access to more community, aftermarket and software support, whether it be paid or free. The final step will be acquiring a special USB cable which will connect your vehicle's OBD port to your laptop's USB port and then you will be able to see and modify the MAPS stored inside your ECU. So this sounds great right? What more could you ask for? What is the purpose of a standalone ECU if re-flashing already let's you modify your stock one? Well, reflashing, just like anything else has it's limits and depending on your vehicle platform, goal and desires these limitations may make a standalone a ECU much more sensible option. The reason behind this is that your stock ECU is designed for your specific engine. In contrast to this a standalone ECU is infinitely more flexible. For example the AEM infinity 506 that I'm holding in my hand can run any engine with up to 6 cylinders. It doesn't even care if the engine is two stroke or four stroke, the injectors can be either high impedance or low impedance, the engine can be turbocharged or naturally aspirated, the throttle can be dirve by wire or cable, it can control nitrous, compensate for flex fuel or the amount of ethanol in your fuel, it can control boost based on rpm, vehicle, speed, gear, ethanol content, it can even perform traction control and launch control, it can protect your engine based on coolant temperature, oil pressure, oil temperature, knock, intake air temperature, fuel pressure, air fuel ratios, it can even control stepper motors and log data for your. But there is a catch. A standalone ECU may be almost infinitely flexible...but as such it is also a blank canvas. When you read the data from your OEM ECU you will have a starting point, a setup that is known to work. A standalone will have no values in its maps unless you type something in. This lack of a starting point and large amount of features and settings my make a standalone ECU seem more intimidating than it really is. So to better see the pros and cons of both setups let's go through a bunch of typical user scenarios to see which setup shines where and which category of user do you see yourself fitting the best. Wiring diagram still image: 🤍 Wiring diagram editable: 🤍 Paint.net for editing the diagram: 🤍 This video is a detailed step by step guide on how to install a standalone ECU. It’s aimed at people with no previous experience doing a job like this and has the goal of demystifying the process. It covers everything including the design of the wiring diagram, tools and supplies, sensors, the wiring process itself as well as the install and physical location of the ECU and associated components. So, let’s get started Now before we start any work on wiring, what we need to do is create a wiring diagram. A wiring diagram is by far the most important part of the job and it will be something that you will be constantly referencing throughout the install. Now regardless of whether you use a flying lead harness or building the harness from scratch you will need some specialized tools. A really helpful tool is a set of wire stripping pliers. They enable you to quickly, neatly and consistently strip wires and this can really save time and effort because you will be stripping a minimum of 100 wires on any standalone install. The next thing you need are crimping pliers suitable for crimping small pins that go onto for thin gauge wires. You can not crimp ECU pins with something like this. The numbers on the pliers correspond to different wire gauges, but this isn’t set in stone and may vary depending on wire insulation thickness and quality. Once you crimp a few pins you will see that the quality of your crimping improves quickly. These are 20 dollar pliers I got from banggood and honestly they worked just fine for me. If you want something a bit better you can use these ones from Molex. Once you’re ready to start wiring it’s a good idea to lay and organize everything on a nice flat surface. It’s also really helpful to out print the wiring diagram for reference on a large format paper because you’lll be looking at this a lot. Now what you’ll essentially be doing during the wiring process is connecting the ECU connector to sensor, injector, coil and other connectors. Basically you’re joining connectors to other connectors. When it comes to connectors you should always first figure out what kind of a connector you’re working with before stripping and crimping anything. Some connectors are known as pull to seat. This means that you first pass the corresponding wire through the connector and only strip and crimp after this. The final step is pulling the wire back until the pin is seated into its slot. Other connectors maybe an opposite process, so you will strip and crimp the wire and then push it into the connector until it’s seated. So definitely check before crimping anything. When it comes to the direction of wiring you have two choices. You can start at the engine end or the ECU end. I decided to start at the engine end. This means that you basically wire up all the sensor connectors and then organize and group all the wires and finally find a suitable place through which you enter the cabin and then connect everything into the ECU connector. I also decided to install my expandable braided wire sleeves at this point although this is not recommended until you’re sure that everything is connected properly and works as it should. I decided to ignore this because the wire sleeving can easily be opened later up for repairs and changes and because I wanted to avoid the extra work of disconnecting everything and then sleeving and then reconnecting. I chose the cabin for the location of the ECU as it’s recommended to keep the ECU away from the temperature fluctuations and vibrations present inside the engine bay. Having the ECU in the cabin is also the most convenient location because you’ll be often hooking up with a USB cable to the ECU for tuning purposes. I bought a suitable sized aluminum plate which I drilled and taped and then painted black. I then simply bolted the ECU together with the relays and the fuse box to the plate. How Engine Control Unit (ECU) Works - Full Explained ENGINE CONTROL UNIT is the brain of the engine that controls all the functioning of the engine. It serves several functions which includes regulating and maintaining the amount of fuel and air in the fuel injection part and helps in increasing horsepower of the engine. The main function of ECU or Engine Control Unit is the controlling of series of function of actuators on an internal combustion engine and ensuring the excellent engine performance. The Engine Control Unit is also called Power train control unit. Within the Engine Bay ECU takes the values from A multitude of sensors and then interpret that data by using multidimensional Performance maps And in this way adjust the engine actuators accordingly. This is also responsible for the best Engine performance. Engine Control Module or ECM is the same as Engine Control unit the difference is that if we named overall combined section of control unit in engine then we called it as Engine Control Module or ECM. ECU is the integral part of EFI or Electronic Fuel Injection(a type of fuel injection system commonly used among cars).Electronic Fuel Injection can be divided into sub-systems namely Air induction system , fuel delivery System and the electronic control system. And from here the function of the ECU starts. Functioning of ECU Controlling the air-fuel mixture :This is the one of the most Important function of ECU as it controls the fuel mixture used by the engine. It determines the amount of air-fuel mixture injecting into the engine. The program received the necessary data and computes it and gives the appropriate amount of mixture. It also decides whether it is the right time to deliver the air-fuel mixture in a proper ration or not. This process is also called injection duration. Controlling the ignition timing: ECU adjust the exact timing of the spark or the ignition timing to provide the better power and economy. ECU detects itself whether there is the problem in the compression stroke or not and works according and set the timing of ignition. This is mainly happened in the condition whenever there is unburned air-fuel mixture left and it is subjected to combination of heat and pressure .This results in detonation also known as Knocking or pinking . ECU detects the knocking and delayed the time of spark to prevent it. Controlling on Idle speed and variable valve timing: Most cars have also built in control system in their ECU for controlling idle speed. Idle speed is controlled through the programmable throttle stop. Apart from the controlling on idle speed ECU also controls the timing at which the valve open or close in the engine cycle. The best suitable and appropriate timing of opening and closing of valve helps in increasing the power and economy of the engine. ECU Also Increases the Torque and BHP .As it governs the fuel injection into the cylinder,it is programmed for the efficient performance of the engine at any environment whenever ECU encounters increase in load then it initiates a signal for more fuel injection & thus engines generates more BHP.

Top 10 symptoms of a bad engine electronic control unit or control module

00:09:19
17.11.2022

#ECU #ECM #Bad_ECU Top 10 symptoms of a bad engine electronic control unit or control module The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is also called the Engine Control Module (ECM). This module processes information sent to it from engine sensors so it can regulate your engine’s performance by making adjustments to the air/fuel mixture, fuel usage, and combustion sparks. 1. Check Engine Light alert Usually, the check engine light will come on at the first sign of trouble. The easiest symptom to recognize is when the “Check Engine” warning light illuminates on the dashboard. In cases where the engine control unit detects issues with its electronic components, circuits, and or sensors, it will immediately cause the Check Engine warning light to illuminate. To figure out if the engine control unit is truly having problems, you need to search for the specific trouble codes on your vehicle’s computer. Therefore, whenever the engine check light pops on the dashboard, diagnose the vehicle to see if you have a failed ECM. If so, it may be caused by a bad ECU relay or ground. There are several engine control module failure causes. Search the meaning of the fault codes on your browser and fix or replace the culprit. If there is something wrong with the engine control unit, the Onboard Diagnostics II (OBD2) will show some of the code, and you need to address them properly. 2. Engine Misfires or Stalls Another symptom that may follow a warning light illumination is an engine that misfires or maybe even stalls. The ECU controls the order in which the spark plugs fire, for example, and if that order is compromised by a faulty engine control unit, you’ll end up with misfiring plugs. You may find your engine idling roughly, sputtering as it tries to pick up speed, or even stalling while you’re stopped and idling or while you’re in motion. 3. Bad Gas Mileage or poor fuel economy The ECU gathers data from the vehicle’s sensors and electronic components, and using this data, the ECU controls fuel injectors and decide the amount of fuel to be injected. When the engine control module fails, it might not know the right amount of gas to send to the combustion chamber. It may send a higher amount of fuel to the engine. This means you’ll have a compromised fuel mileage. It also means constant visits to the gas stations. 4. Poor Engine Performance a faulty ECU may cause the wrong amount of fuel to be delivered to the combustion chamber. When this happens, you are going to notice some performance issues. It may even shake and vibrate some, especially when trying to go up hills, when there’s a lot of extra weight in the car, or when you’re towing something. You may also experience a rough idle due to not having enough fuel for the conditions. 5. Car Won’t Start The worst symptom of a bad ECU is when your car does not start at all. It may be difficult to start at first but then, it will never start up again. This happens after the engine control unit has a complete failure and does not function at all. 6. Loss of Acceleration Loss of acceleration is another sign of a bad ECU, It’s always easy to notice if you have less acceleration in the car. On some cars, the vehicle’s ECU is directly connected with the transmission control module, this is basically because the ECU helps the TCM make proper adjustments for your car’s acceleration. 8. ECU Getting Overheated Car ECU gets some normal heat from the processors, transistors, or chips. But, if the ECU frequently gets overheated, This is not good for its normal operation. overheating can damage the ECU. an overheated ECU can’t control the vehicle properly and hence may bring some issues in performance. 9. Engine Lags or Surges Because the ECU controls your engine’s timing and fuel usage, you might notice engine performance issues such as lagging or surging if the module is going bad. For example, if your engine isn’t getting enough fuel because the faulty ECU has thrown off the air/fuel mixture, your vehicle will lag or stutter when you step on the accelerator. Too much fuel can make your engine surge and increase increased fuel consumption. The ECU can throw off your engine’s timing, as well leading to incomplete combustion or engine knocking. 10. Rough or irregular shifting This usually happens when there is a loss of power. But in this case, it happens when the ECU sends false information to the transmission control module. It also means the Transmission Control Module is not getting appropriate information it needs to shift the gears smoothly. Because of this, the transmission will find it difficult to shift the gears smoothly and at appropriate times.

ENGINE CONTROL UNIT is the brain of the engine that controls all the functioning of the engine. #EngineControlUnit #ECU The wait is finally over.
